Looking Behind to Plan Ahead

What 2025 Fundraising Trends Tell Us About Fall

ree

At the halfway mark of 2025, we have partnered on dozens of events across the Pacific Northwest and beyond, from elegant galas to lively festivals to mission-focused luncheons. And while every event is unique, we've seen few clear trends that are worth noting as we look ahead to the busy fall season.

Some are surprising, others are reassuring—but all of them offer a chance to fine-tune your planning strategy and make your upcoming event even more successful.

Here’s what we’ve observed so far in 2025 and what it means for fall.

1.  Guests Want More Socialization Opportunities

We're seeing a noticeable social shift—guests are more eager than ever to connect and celebrate together. This growing desire for interaction has led to an increased demand for extended cocktail hours, intentional social breaks during the program, and built-in opportunities throughout the event for meaningful guest engagement.

What this means for fall: Structure your event timeline to include moments of socializing so guests can connect with one another. For example, set 15 minutes apart during the program for a dinner break to encourage community at everyone’s tables.

2.  Fewer No-Shows and Higher Commitment

Unlike earlier post-pandemic years, where a 10–15% no-show rate was common, 2025 has brought stronger attendance. Ticketed and RSVP events are seeing closer to full participation, especially when guests receive strong pre-event communication.

What this means for fall: Do not rely on a no-show buffer. Prepare materials—name tags, meals, seating—for close to 100% attendance. Confirm final numbers earlier and communicate clearly with attendees to keep them engaged and committed.

3. Attendance Growth Is Slowing—But Engagement Can Grow

Over the past few years, many nonprofits have seen event attendance steadily rise, especially as in-person events rebounded after the pandemic. But this year, we are seeing a subtle but noticeable trend: numbers are leveling off. Events that saw big growth in 2022–2024 are struggling to maintain that same momentum in 2025.

This doesn’t mean your event isn’t compelling—it just means the environment is shifting. The plateau could be a reflection of broader factors: economic concerns, world events, or simple calendar fatigue. Guests are still showing up (often with fewer no-shows than expected), but attracting more of them is becoming harder.

What this means for fall: Instead of focusing solely on growing your headcount, shift your energy toward maximizing the value of the guests who are already attending. Prioritize deeper donor engagement, more targeted messaging, and stronger calls to action. A smaller but more committed audience can be just as—if not more—impactful than a larger crowd.

4. Fall Calendars Are Filling Up Fast

Organizations that started early this year with their save-the-dates, sponsorship outreach, and marketing are seeing better turnout and engagement. The fall season is packed, and guests and donors are making decisions sooner than ever.

What this means for fall: If you are not already well into planning mode, start today. Make decisions early and get your event on people’s calendars before they commit to other fundraising events. Book your venue, send your save-the-date email, secure your vendors, and launch your sponsorship outreach. A strong head start is the best way to stand out in a crowded season.

5. Guests Want More Mission, Less Fluff

In 2025, we are seeing a noticeable shift: guests want to connect with your mission, not just attend a party. Some organizations are stepping away from the glitz and glamour of a traditional gala and instead leaning into experiences that are more grounded in their mission., Black-tie, multi-course dinners are being replaced with casual storytelling sessions, immersive programming, and guest experiences that feel purposeful.

What this means for fall: It’s a great time to rethink how your event expresses your mission. Could you swap out the formal dinner for a more interactive program? Trim the décor budget and invest in a powerful speaker or client story? Revisit your run of show and ask, “Is every part of this event moving our mission forward?” When authenticity takes center stage, guests respond with their hearts and their wallets.

Ready to Make Your Fall Event Stronger?

As we reach the midpoint of 2025, event trends reveal that guests are craving more meaningful connection, mission-driven programming, and early, clear communication. You can drive deeper engagement and event success by focusing on authenticity, strategic planning, and maximizing the experience for those already in the room.
